Human co-ordination can be divided into two main categories:

  1. Chemical co-ordination(non nervous co-ordination)
  2. Non chemical co-ordination(nervous co-ordination)

Central Nervous System

central nervous system

Cerebrum

  • Cerebrum is made up of two hemispheres.
  • There are many folds on the surface. Thereby increasing the surface area.
  • Cerebrum controls all thevoluntary activities.
  • There are special areas to identify vision, sound, smell, taste, touch and pressure.
    • cerebrum
  • Right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and left hemisphere controls the right side of the body.
  • The function of cerebellum is to control all themuscular co-ordinations.
  • Medulla oblongata controls all theinvoluntary actions and cranial reflexesin our body.
  • Brain is coverd by the cranial bones which is a part of our skull.
  • There are 3 membranes between the brain and this cranial bone.Namely:

Cerebellum

Eg:-

Stretching
Hitting
Throwing

Medulla oblongata

Eg:-

Heart beat
Respiration

Elders often say that hard blows aren’t to be given to the back of the head. The reason is that the medulla oblongata is situated at the back of the head and a hard blow may result its damage. Thereby causing the victim to suffer from respiratory problems or stop in the heart beat leading to death.

How is the brain protected

meninges

  • Brain is coverd by the cranial bones which is a part of our skull.
  • There are 3 membranes between the brain and this cranial bone.Namely:
  1. Pia mater
  2. Arachnoid
  3. dura mater
  • These  3 membranes together are known as theMENINGES.
  • Between the innermost meninges (pia mater)and the middle(arachnoid),there is a fluid calledCEREBRO SPINAL FLUID.
  • This fluid shock absorber.
  • When a germ gets into the Cerebro spinal fluid, the meninges gets swelled and causesMENINGITIS.
  • Meningitis can cause blindness or deafness.
